NV Leg Alert- Oppose AJR 10

Date: May 12th, 2021
Time: 9:00AM
Committee: Senate Commerce and Labor
Note: This is a working session and as such public comment will not be heard. We need you to call the legislators listed below and urge them to vote NO!
AJR 10 ** – Proposes to amend the Nevada Constitution to prospectively increase the required minimum wage paid to employees. AJR 10 ** already passed in the 2019 Legislative Session and the Assembly Floor this year. Our last chance to stop this detrimental resolution is in the Senate before it makes its way to the ballot during the 2022 elections.
Explanation of AJR 10 **
This bill looks to increase the minimum wage to $12 per hour regardless of benefits included and also states that if the federal minimum wage ever increases over $12 then federal wage would take priority over state wage. This Joint resolution would take effect on July 1st, 2024.
Minimum wage was created for entry level jobs that young people can work and gain experience. Increasing the minimum wage creates less jobs which hurts the exact people they are supposed to help, including; minorities, low skilled workers, and teenagers. Increasing the minimum wage does not help everyday Nevadans, its true intentions are to pay off union workers that help Democrats during campaign season. Don’t let the Democrats fool you, increasing the minimum wage gets rid of entry level jobs, hurting the new workforce.
Increasing the minimum wage hurts small businesses. Under the Sisolak shutdown, many small businesses have been forced to lay off staff, some even forced to close their doors. Increasing the minimum wage creates an environment where small businesses owners cannot afford to hire staff in a recovering post shutdown economy. This is irresponsible policy and intends to hurt the people that need the most help.
