Last night, Hillary Clinton addressed the Democrat Convention as its nominee. But her biggest supporter in Nevada, Catherine Cortez Masto was nowhere to be found. Fearing a repeat of her Nevada state convention speech where she was loudly booed by Sanders supporters, the former Attorney General chose to spend the week pushing her job-killing tax plan in rural Nevada.
Cortez Masto’s absence from the DNC this week was especially peculiar given other Nevada Democrats like Harry Reid and Ruben Kihuen making the trip to Philadelphia to back Clinton. Just weeks ago, Cortez Masto reiterated her support for the embattled nominee after she was condemned by the FBI for her home email server, going so far as to say she might’ve acted the same way had she been in her position. Why now is she suddenly afraid to stand by Clinton?
It appears that Cortez Masto has realized how poisonous Clinton’s image is to her campaign. Catherine Cortez Masto used her powers as Attorney General to target political opponents like Brian Krolicki while letting corrupt members of her own party like Moose Arberry off with a slap on the wrist.
Just like Hillary Clinton, Catherine Cortez Masto clearly believes that some politicians should be held to a different standard than others. While she may have hidden from Clinton this week in Philadelphia, Cortez Masto can’t escape from the fact that she’s just another career politician putting her and her party’s own self interest before Nevada families.
