Clinton Visit Presents Challenges For Catherine Cortez Masto
Embattled Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton will be speaking in Las Vegas today. Her visit comes in the wake of a tough week for Harry Reid and his cronies in the Nevada Democratic Party, who have desperately tried to crush dissent from Bernie Sanders’ supporters after a chaotic and divisive state party convention.
The Reid machine’s support for Clinton has placed his handpicked successor, Catherine Cortez Masto, in an increasingly precarious position. After she was loudly booed by Sanders supporters in her convention speech after voicing support for Clinton, Cortez Masto tried to stay out of the fray while her communications director joined other Reid operatives in savaging Sanders supporters, demanding the Vermont socialist apologize for his supporters’ actions. But only a few hours after initially saying the pundits should decide the matter, Cortez Masto got in line with her party leadership and called for an apology.
This wasn’t the first time Catherine Cortez Masto showed hesitancy to stand too close to Clinton, having put off endorsing her publicly for months until Reid’s support for Clinton became clear, she is clearly aware of the challenges that endorsing that Clinton presents for her own candidacy. With Nevada Democrats facing historic divisions that threaten their ability to compete in November, the timing Hillary Clinton’s visit to the Silver State will be sure to cause headaches for Catherine Cortez Masto and other Democratic candidates supporting the scandal-plagued presidential candidate.
