One week since the Director of the FBI blasted Hillary Clinton’s use of a secret home email server as “extremely careless” and left over 100 classified emails unprotected, it is clear that the issue is not going away for the presumptive Democratic nominee or her supporters like Catherine Cortez Masto. With polls showing a majority of Americans believing Clinton should have faced criminal charges, a new NBC poll this morning shows that even a vast majority of Clinton supporters disapprove of her actions, with 68% seeing her conduct as inappropriate.
This poll makes recent statements by Catherine Cortez Masto even more disturbing. Last week, not only did Cortez Masto stand by Clinton and dismiss her actions as unimportant, but she refused to say she wouldn’t have done the same as Clinton had she been in her position. The idea that a U.S. Senate candidate won’t rule out taking actions that have been labeled extremely careless, dangerous, and a fireable offense to many federal workers shows an alarming failure to grasp how serious Clinton’s actions were.
Despite even a vast majority of members of her own party disapproving of Clinton’s email conduct, Catherine Cortez Masto seems content to not only give Clinton a pass but to leave the door open for future federal office-holders, perhaps even herself, to take the same reckless actions that almost resulted in criminal charges for the former Secretary of State. Cortez Masto is clearly committed to ensuring that she and her political allies are allowed to play by a different set of rules than the rest of us, even when national security is at stake. Her dismissiveness of Clinton’s email scandal shows that she is too out of touch and too irresponsible to represent Nevada in the Senate.
